Art suggestions wanted!
Posted Aug 18, 2009 at 11:31 CEST in Art and illustration.
I really want to find more artists that I like. I’m super picky about art and very seldom find anything that I really love.
In a way I’m one of my own favourite artists since I paint themes I love in a style I love, but it’s not all that exiting to sit and look at stuff I came up with myself, at least not for very long!
Some artists I like a lot are Theodor Kittelsen (probably my favourite), Yoshitaka Amano and James Jean, especially his Fables covers. I tend to prefer a more “illustrationy” style. Some themes I love are mystery and adventure, mythology, folklore and fairy tales, heroic yet glamorous girls and circus and sideshow stuff. I also really like underwater stuff, and I have a thing for swamps and all things murky and slimy.
I love pulp magazine covers and retro science-fiction pictures, I like the mystery and mythology of a lot of the prerafaelite paintings and I like a lot of traditional Japanese art with supernatural themes. I’m also very fond of the illustrations for La vie parisienne.
I really want this book, The Brinkley Girls, because her illustrations seem like my kind of pictures. But it’s the first thing I’ve really liked in a long time.
Do you have any tips for me? I would especially like tips on art books I might like.
I don’t remember where I found this but I love the motif!

A painting by Böcklin. I love it so much. The merman under the water is perfect!

Know I’m a little late.. but http://www.raycaesar.com and http://www.markryden.com -You must already know them…
Sarah, telephonesnow.blogspot.com
Torsten Slama - he’s a Berlin-based Austrian artist that uses post-apocalyptic sci-fi themes, like a world where only architecture and animals remain. You and he are my favorite modern European artists!
Here’s a blog post I made about him a while back:

John R. Neil made some really lovely art nouveau-esque illustrations for the 2nd - 14th Oz books written by L. Frank Baum. I’ll try to get around soon to scanning some of the color illustrations for you from an early edition in my collection, as it is very difficult to find a modern printing that includes the color plates, which is a shame as they are so beautiful.
Johanna, johannaost.com
I think I’ve seen some of those illustrations and they are great.

Hi, I hope these links might be of some interest to you:
http://www.americanartarchives.com/
This site is full of pulp art and advertising illustration. Just clic on “artists bios and artwork” and start to explore it. Some artist I think you might like are Earl Norem, Mort Kunstler, George Petty, Early Bergey…
http://www.imagenetion.com/index.html
A huge site containing pin-up art, illustration and art in general. Somethings I think you might like are the “ESQUIRE GIRLS (1946-56)” and perhaps the pin-up art of “Fred Beltran”. I also like very much the sci-fi art of “Jim Burns”. Well, just take a look all over the site, maybe you find some art that you like.
http://www.humano.com
Well, talking about Fred Beltran I know him from his comic book art. Specially from the graphic novels series “Megalex”. More about him and his art can be found here:
http://www.humano.com/profil/Fred%2BBeltran
Just clic on the covers and know more about each graphic novel. It shows some of pages of the stories. If you want you can also take a look in the works of other artists. Just clic on “Catalogue” and explore it.
http://www.coverbrowser.com/
Another huge site full of comic book and pulp cover illustration. I found this while looking for cover art of the “Heavy Metal” magazine, which i like very much, since it carried a lot of art from french comics artists. Perhaps you can find something that interest you there.
Well, i hope you like these links. In a next post I will give you a suggestion about books you might find interesting. Have a nice time.
Johanna, johannaost.com

Många vackra vattenscener. Kanske lite för surrealistiskt för din smak, men väldigt inspirerande också
Karim Kai Hetherington, artofkarimhetheri…
check out the little known belgian surrealist william degouve de nunques, pure original brilliance and also the sublime but criminally unknown but equally fantastic romantic painter Ralph Blakelock

Hi, here are the book sugestions I’ve mentioned on my last post. Sorry for the long delay but I wanted to take some pictures of them to show you but i had to first fix my camera . Meanwhile I had the time to look at my hard drive and I’ve find many links from pages I’ve saved while I browse the internet looking for subjects that interest me. Perhaps you find them interesting too.
Well, The first book is “The History of the Future: Images of the 21st Century” by Christophe Canto and Odile Faliu . This book is a kind of like a “history of science fiction”. It tells how the future was seen in each of determinate periods of the history of our modern age with correspondent illustrations of the time. So the book is packed with “retro” illustrations with the plus that the reading is very interesting. You can find it here:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/History-Future-Images-21s…
The book is out of print but you can obtain a used one from Amazon. Here are some images from the book:
http://s827.photobucket.com/albums/zz195/mars2009…
http://s827.photobucket.com/albums/zz195/mars2009…
http://s827.photobucket.com/albums/zz195/mars2009…

http://s827.photobucket.com/albums/zz195/mars2009…
http://s827.photobucket.com/albums/zz195/mars2009…
http://s827.photobucket.com/albums/zz195/mars2009…
The other book is “The Tale of the Unicorn” ( “A História do Unicórnio” in portuguese) from an excellent children book illustrator, Gennady Spirin, in fact any of his books are great, his illustrations have such a magic atmosphere.
Here are some of its images:
http://s827.photobucket.com/albums/zz195/mars2009…
http://s827.photobucket.com/albums/zz195/mars2009…
http://s827.photobucket.com/albums/zz195/mars2009…
http://s827.photobucket.com/albums/zz195/mars2009…
http://s827.photobucket.com/albums/zz195/mars2009…
And surely you can find much more of his work on the internet. Just use the google image search.
Another great eastern european illustrator is Vladyslav Yerko. Take a look at
www.snowqueen.us to see some of his work. Be sure to explore the menu on
the left, especially “the book” and “the artist”. More of his work can be found in this link:
http://www.estetica-design-forum.com/great-graphi…
And still talking about eastern european illustrators, this is another one, Vania Zouravliov. Amazing work. Take a look at all his portfolio. Here is the link:
http://www.bigactive.com/illustration/vania-zoura…
This one is an american artist, Todd Schoor, I knew him from the magazine Justapox. His art has a funny mix of surrealism with comic-book culture, quite amusing. Here is his homepage:
www.toddschorr.com/
Also there is this interesting five parts interview on Youtube were he talks about his work. This is the first video, then just click on the menu on the right to watch the rest:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euhD7zi-nhw&featur…
Well, I stil have other links to suggest you but it’s kind of getting late now. I promise to send you the rest in another post. I hope you like these ones. Have a nice time.
Johanna, johannaost.com
Karim: Thank you so much for the tip about De Nunques, absolutely amazing!
Martins: Thank you very much for the tips! That unicorn book was actually one of my favourites as a child and it has probably influenced my interest in unicorn mythology. The illustrations are fantastic.
Martins
I have to addmit that it would be hard to believe that such a talented artist as Gennady Spirin would pass unknow by you. In fact you know his work since you were a child!
Well, so here are rest of the links I’ve mentioned before. Perhaps you already know some of these but I hope that among them you find something that’s new for you:
http://thepulp.net/
Lots of links about pulp magazines. Explore the links at the left and certainly you will find interesting sites.
——————————————
http://www.pulpartists.com/
A list of many pulp artists.
———————————————-
http://www.menspulpmags.com/
A blog filled up of pulp art. It also has nice links at the right to other sites on the subject.
———————————————-
http://www.pulpinternational.com/
A blog not only about pulp art art but also about cinema, popular culture… I found it while searching for the cover art of the french magazine “Metal Hurlant”. Which they have a post about, here:
http://www.pulpinternational.com/pulp/entry/Nine-…
——————————————————
http://www.philsp.com/
A huge site with lots of pulp art. You can explore it by clicking on the links, “All Magazines”, “Genre Magazines” or “Pulp Magazines”. Avoid the link “Illustrated Checklists”, it has a lot of missing links. If i’m not wrong i think i’ve spotted the same problem in the “Image Gallery” link but i’m not sure now. Anyway a quick way to find what might interest you go for these titles (through the “all magazines” link):
-Fantastic (1952)
-Fantastic Adventures
-Planet stories
-Pep Stories
-Paris Nights
-Startling Stories
-Saucy Movie Tales
-Amazing Stories
Every time you read “more images” and “issue checklist” below the images click on the link for a more complete list of illustrations.

http://enochbolles.blogspot.com/
Perhaps you already know this site. Anyway here is the link. A blog solely dedicated to the art of Enoch Bolles.

http://www.all-art.org/contents.html
Look down on the index for “The Encyclopedia of Bad Taste” and look for “Pin-Up Art”. Well, it’s funny, if they think that it’s bad taste why they’ve put in their “art”
site? Of course we can not compare popular culture with “art” but even popular culture have it’s place and should not be judged by the its standards.
.
Other pin-up sites:
http://stillwicked.com/index.html

His work is located on the first page of “nouvelles plaches” below his art click on link “toutes les plaches” to see a list with many comic-book pages of his artwork. Milo Manara, also known by me from the Heavy Metal pages, is another artist to look at. Well, take a look all around the site, maybe you’ll find another artists that catch your attention.

http://www.galerie-boulet.com/
This is an french art gallery which sells works of surreal art. There are interesting artworks which can be explored following the artist links at the right. The artist in question here that I want to show you is Claude Verlinde. I know him from a book with his works I’ve bought some time ago.
