LA tips

Posted Jul 27, 2010 at 14:13 CEST in Travels and outings.

Thinking about going to Los Angeles for our next trip. Any suggestions on things to do and see? Museums, shops, beaches, anything?

That’s funny I was just asking the same question:) See what people said here:

I suggest you stop off in TN and shag me.

Thanks for the link Heidi! Seems like we might be going around the same time :)

Oh darn, I didn’t realize my html links wouldn’t transfer. I hope it makes sense without them.

Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Hollywood.
Founded in 1899, home to many Golden Era movie stars.

La Brea Tar Pits in LA
Tiny and kind of kitschy but fascinating all the same.

American Rag Cie. in LA
Not far from the La Brea Tar Pitas. Vintage clothing store. Usually pretty overpriced but you can sometimes find nice things. Fun for browsing anyway. They sell very expensive modern clothes there too, so just ignore that part :)

Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens in Pasadena
Manuscripts, art, and beautiful gardens. They’re also having an exhibit until September 6 on the Artistic Furniture of Charles Rohlfs. I haven’t seen it but his work looks amazing.

The Gamble House in Pasadena
Built in 1908, American Arts and Crafts style house.

Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena
They have a some 18th century French paintings that I think you would like and some nice 19th century European like Edgar Degas. Not a huge museum but well rounded and full of treasures.

The Queen Mary in Long Beach
Built in the 1930s, a bit pricey to tour but fun to see.

4th Street/Retro Row in Long Beach
There’s a row of shops selling vintage or retro clothes. I wouldn’t really call anything in Southern California affordable, but there are usually some nice unique things here.

Thank you very much for the tips! They sound great.

I grew up in Venice Beach CA( in LA) which is best known for its street performers, artists and all around strange/interesting mix of culture and art. Its become a bit touristy…but still worth a trip. Perfect place for people watching with a nice stretch of sand and ocean to sunbathe in. However i wouldn’t recommend swimming in the ocean anywhere in LA- very polluted.

Hi Joanna!

You should definitely check out a Hollywood studio tour. Those are really fun and you’re sure to learn a lot. I highly recommend the Paramount Studio tour because the tour guides really know their old movie history and they can get you into real sets. That’s good tour if you want to learn more about your favorite old and new stars. We saw Lucille Ball’s office and the playground she built for her children, we also learned about the haunted stage, we saw a couple commercials being filmed, and we got to enter a couple TV show sets that were being used. There’s also the Universal Studio tour – which is integrated into their theme park and is more like a ride. You’ll see lots of cool vintage “sets” – though they’re remakes from the original ones. That one is pretty fun though. When I went, they had the set from Jaws, Psycho, and Leave it to Beaver.

Also, I recommend checking out Santa Monica: the weather is always nice, the beach is fun (Venice Beach is not too far away), and there’s shopping and dining nearby. Also, you might see a few celebrities driving around. There’s a lot that live in that area.

If you do head to the La Brea Tar Pits, the LACMA is right next to it. They generally have great exhibits.

I’m not particularly a fan of the Hollywood Walk of Fame since there are lot of creepy people there – but if you’ve never been, you should go.

That’s all for now! Have a great trip!

Great tips! Thank you!

My best friend just told me about an old-school soda shop/store that Disney just opened in LA, next to the El Capitan theater, which apparently plays primarily Disney movies now. :)

Universal Studios Hollywood is great too, the Jurassic Park ride is fun.

I also agree with the person above who said the Queen Mary (Long Beach is a good beach, pretty sea glass), and I also recommend wandering around Balboa Island and taking the ferry to the peninsula. The beach there is great, and there’s the pier with the original Ruby’s Diner at the end. Plus the fun zone, which has funnel cake and a ferris wheel and arcades. It’s basically a fun little boardwalk like what Paradise Pier in DCA tries to pull off.

Johanna! That’s so awesome! Youre coming to my hometown yayyyy! Seriously though, go to the Griffith Observatory, it’s amazing. Also the Museum of Jurassic Technology in Culver City is really cool and crazy.

Hej Johanna!

Hi Johanna,

Here are some places you might find interesting

Grauman’s Chinese and Egyptian Theatres- Both are located on Hollywood Boulevard only a couple of blocks away from each other. http://www.americancinematheque.com/egyptian/egyp… and http://www.manntheatres.com/chinese/ .

Maxwell DeMille’s Cicada Club- It’s located in the 1928 Art Deco Oviatt Building in Downtown Los Angeles. They always have live big band and singers reminiscent of the 1930s and 1940s. It is very lively and EVERYONE is dressed in period clothes (staff, entertainers, AND guests). Dita von Teese goes there from time to time. http://www.clubcicada.com/main.asp and http://justjared.buzznet.com/2009/07/18/dita-von-… and (Dita’s Tango “performance” at the Cicada) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObbsXaqrTXE .

Vintage Expo- Vintage Clothes, shoes, accessories, etc. Everything a vintage lover may want in an auditorium. This takes place in Santa Monica, which is ~14 miles west of Los Angeles, right next to the beach. Dita pops in from time to time. http://www.vintageexpo.com/

Vintage Clothing and Textile Show- Similar to the show above, but also incorporates a sewing aspect. There are many vendors who sell vintage fabric and sewing notions. Takes place in Burbank adjacent to the northern part of Griffith Park (which is a great place others mentioned). http://www.caskeylees.com/Vintage/Vintage.html

Rose Bowl Flea Market- The biggest and most famous flea market in the LA area (takes place in Pasadena, home of the New Year’s Rose Parade). Has antiques, vintage clothing and goods, furniture, new stuff. So many cool things! http://www.rgcshows.com/RoseBowl.aspx

Los Angeles Flea Market- Same concept as above, only this one just opened a month ago in Dodger Stadium. I hear many vendors do both the LA and Rose Bowl flea market, though. https://thelafleamarket.com/

Long Beach Outdoor Antique and Collectable Market- Has a couple of vendor that also participate in the Rose Bowl flea market, but I think most are local. Dita also pops into this one. Oh and it takes place in Long Beach, about 15 miles south of Los Angeles. http://www.longbeachantiquemarket.com/

Petersen’s Automotive Museum- It’s specialty, cars. Vintage modern, concept cars, you name it. Until January 2011 there is an exhibit called, “AUTOMOTIVATED: STREAMLINED FASHION AND AUTOMOBILES.” It explores the relationship between fashion and cars and how they affected each other. Their gift shop is fabulous! http://www.petersen.org/

FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising) Museum and Galleries- Since they’re a fashion school, they always have interesting events going on. Their exhibits often feature things like TV and film costume design. http://fidm.edu/resources/museum+galleries/

Last thing, it’s cliché, I know, but perhaps you’d like to check out Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. My favorite stores to visit (not shop, sadly) are: Tiffany and Co, Prada, Salvatore Ferragamo, and Saks 5th Avenue.

I could go on and on and on, but this is just a “short” list of places you may want to visit.

(You know, you have so many fans all over the world that when you visit a place, you should do a print /book signing event. I know you have often said you’re shy, but we would love to have the chance to meet and greet with such a style icon and talented artist)

Can’t wait to see your vacation trip pictures!! Good luck!!

Hej Johanna
Tvättar du verkligen ditt hår bara en gång per vecka? Hur får du lockarna att hålla en hel vecka?
Kram Bettina

Monica: Thanks you so much for all the tips!

kram Bettina

I should be thanking you, Johanna… Seems there are many more tips on your post;) LOL

My favorite spot in LA is Watts Towers. This artist built them in the early mid century, and they’re just insane–huge, lacy-looking spires made of junk. The neighborhood thought they were an eyesore and a safety hazard, and then in the 1990s, they were made into a national historic landmark. Look them up! :)

nu var det ett tag sedan du uppdaterade. :) förresten, när fyller du år?

Jag fyller år 15 oktober :)

If old ’40s and ’50s Hollywood is what you’re after…

and the Formosa Cafe (made famous in “L.A. Confidential”…)

Not sure if i’m too late, but wanted to suggest my book, Vintage LA for help in finding all the very best vintage spots in L.A.:

But if you already went, hope you had a lovely, old-Hollywood glam time : )

P.S. J’adore your blog!
