A few photos of me wearing my (maternal) grandmother’s wedding dress. The dress is beautiful but unfortunately beyond repair, with rips and holes everywhere. I had to stitch it up a little bit and pose with the most presentable side towards the camera.
They’re unfortunately not the greatest photos and I don’t look my best, but after getting out of it once I didn’t feel like trying again another day. It’s kind of hard to get off and I of course had to do it very carefully and slowly not too rip it more, so I could hardly breathe with it over my head and kept panicking until I got it off!
My grandparents were married in the summer of 1946 and the dress was originally white. It was dyed yellow later for another occasion (someone else’s wedding I think).
Something about the hair and choker along with the dress makes me think of girls in old western movies.
My grandparents’ wedding photo with the dress in its original condition and colour, much fluffier and less wrinkly! Even if the photo is black and white you can see how icy blue my grandfather’s eyes were. I really like the studio setup, it looks very elegant and fancy but is really so simple.

So beautiful–and how special that you own a piece of your family’s history. :) I love that it was later dyed for another occasion; the yellow looks beautiful on you!

What a beautiful dress! Love the detail of the bottice. Its too bad when these old dresses get so fragile they cant be worn. I have a black velvet cocktail dress of my grandmother’s that is completely unwearable because the velvet rips almost upon touch. I love the wedding portrait too, what a handsome couple!

I really like seeing photos of people’s ancestors. You can really see the resemblance; I think you have your Grandfathers nose and your Grandmothers face shape :-)

Amazing! I am sure you are very fond of that dress, what a shame it’s damaged… But it sure is beautiful!

It’s gorgeous! Too bad about the damage, but I do like the photos! Looks like something Scarlett O’Hara would wear ;)

Your grandmothers dress is amazing even colored yellow! It is even nicer to see it in its original glory on your grandmothers wedding day :)
I wish I had a pic of my grandmothers dress just so I could see what it looked like.
I would love to see a tutorial on the hair style you have in this pic as you have worn it before, and I just adore it!

You look wonderful in that yellow…I have always loved that shade but never could wear it with my very olive skin! It is so nice to have that piece of family history in fairly good condition. My grandparents were not sentimental at all and didn’t keep their belongings to pass down to the next generation. My grandmother let my (very young)Mom play in the mud wearing her wedding dress! Can you imagine?? I would never do that!

It’s a lovely dress and you look beautiful!
I have my maternal grandmother’s wedding dress too, in grey green silk, but she was tiny back then- I could wear it when I was nine, not now… It would probably fit you, though. :)

Beautiful story and dress, it’s a treasure. You must be glad keeping it, although it’s a bit broken.
My mum married with a beatiful black dress, full of lace on the sleves, but my sister used it to make a horrible skirt many years ago. She was crazy!

Thanks for all the lovely comments!
Vicky: I’ve never thought of it before but I probably do have my grandfather’s nose, and so does my mother.
Hannah: His eyes were so unusual! My sister’s eyes are really light as well except green like mine and my mother’s.

What a beautiful dress, and a pity it falls apart, but that’s what happens with age. You could display it on a hanger.

*SIGH* I wish I had at least something from my Grandmother’s wardrobe. She threw all her stuff away before I was even old enough to stop her! :( The dress is wonderful and you look amazing in it.
