Showgirls in Florida

Yesterday I came across this set of photos at the Google LIFE archives and was just enchanted. They show a troup of showgirls, probably on tour, in Florida. They hang out on the beach, go for a boat ride, do their laundry, shop and of course perform in their show. Apparently Danny Kaye was part of the show as he appears in quite a lot of the photos (though not in this post). There’s just something wonderful about these photos that makes you want to be there.

The only information listed was the name of the set, “Showgirls in Florida”, that they were taken in 1947 and that the photographer was called Allan Grant (!?). I wish I could read the article they were taken for, if they were ever used. There are tons of photos so I’ve broken them up into three posts. This first one has photos of the girls just generally hanging out in Florida.

Many of the photos show beautiful buildings and places, and lots of Art Deco design. Any Floridian readers that recognise the locations?

While I’m on the subject of Florida: I would love to visit Miami sometime in the not too distant future, for the Art Deco architecture and also because it’s such an iconic 80s city. However, besides going on some kind of architecture tour I really have no idea what to do there (combining it with a Disney World trip goes without saying), so I would love tips! Perhaps going to the Everglades? I love swamps.

This doesn’t really look like Florida to me, especially since she’s dressed relatively warm. Perhaps it was taken on their way there.

One of the girls fixing her makeup in a hotel room or something. Check out the yarn dog on the table shelf. A mascot perhaps? I like that you can see out the window to what looks like another hotel.

These two photos are so beautiful with the completely illuminated house, the water, the palm trees and the solitary man.

I wonder what’s going on here. The old lady and her kitchen don’t reappear in any other photos. I like to think the three young people are siblings visiting their grandmother in Florida while they’re on tour. All of them do look quite a bit alike.

Beautiful outfit and hair! It looks like she’s taking a photo of herself, but were cameras that small during this time?

Great shoes!

Rehearsing in perfect little outfits. Look at the beautiful venue with the wall painting, mirrored pillars and striped curtains.

Same place, just beautiful. Look at that light fixture and the amazing wall painting.

Beautiful Art Deco building. This photo appears to be mirrored, if you look at the sign. It says something like “The ….arleton”

This photo is one of my favourites. It’s so beautiful and calm. The caravan with the canopy, the palm trees, the door with the sheer fabric, the man reading the paper, the girl petting the parrot, the woman making the bed. There something almost surreal and dreamlike about it.

I love that she’s reading Weird Tales!

This cottage or whatever looks so lovely, with the marlin and the number sign.

That Deco mailbox looks interesting.

I love these photos of two girls shopping.

It looks like the girl in the bed is looking through a photo album.

How great is this outfit with the belt and the midriff top?

This is another of my favourite photos. Look at the girl climbing on the balcony!

Så fina naturliga bilder, älskar att de inte är så uppställda :D jätte fina

The girls who are fishing… Notice the sign “Positivly NO fishing on this bridge” Aaaah it’s hilarious! And look at the size of the blond girls victory rolls and the cute braids. ” The bigger the hair the closer to God” as Dolly Parton would put it. Absolutly lovely photos. Thank You!

Wow! These are AMAZING!!! Thanks for sharing.

These are absolutely amazing! I am loving all the Art Deco, I have a great book on Miama Art Deco architecture. The colours are all so beautiful, I’m going to do a post on it nearer to summer. Can’t wait to see the next lot of pictures.

Hej!

Wowzers these are so cool, the girls hair dos alone are making me drool!

Thanks for the comment, I’m glad you like them as much as I do!

Kelly-Marie: I’ll be keeping my eyes out for that post!

Katrina: Jag vet egentligen inte, men har för mig att det kan betyda typ enkla pärlor man använder mest för att ta upp plats mellan de mer speciella pärlorna.

These photos are great! I live in Miami and there are tons of great things to do, you just have to know where to go :) The Mai Kai in Ft. Lauderdale, the city north of Miami, is an amazing tiki themed restaurant/bar. The everglades is really fun, especially if you don’t mind getting up close to alligators! Also, it’s a lot further northwest in Florida but have you ever stumbled across Weeki Wachee? A natural spring and a 50’s relic with mermaid shows!

Thank you very much for the tips! I’d forgotten about the Mai Kai! I’ve seen tons of old photos from the Weeki Wachee mermaid shows, is it still worth seeing?

I love all these three posts! Wonderful!

Nice post. I love the girls’ hair. :)

Johanna, these pictures are spectacular! One of the first places that you should visit when you come to Florida is definitely Miami Beach. Especially South Beach which is the largest Art Deco District of the world. The most popular streets are Ocean Drive, Lincoln Road, and Collins Avenue. And if I am not mistaken, the picture where the girls are window shopping is actually Lincoln Road.

Here is a link of an old post card of Lincoln Rd.:

The picture of the Art Deco building was The Lord Tarleton Hotel located in Collins Avenue. Now is a luxurious apartment complex that is called The Crown, which by the way had a major makeover!

Enjoy your trip!

great pictures! I live in Miami and it’s a really fun place. You should definitely visit the Venetian Pool, Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden, and Vizcaya, they are really fantastic. Also if you go to the website for the History Miami, the museum down here, they offer a lot of really amazing walking and boat tours!

Those are great tips, thank you!
