I love this LIFE photo set of Fifth Avenue window displays from October 1942, photographed by Alfred Eisenstaedt. The outfits of both mannequins and shoppers are incredibly elegant.
The captions are the original ones from the LIFE archive.
Two elegantly dressed women standing on corner of Fifth Avenue and 58th Street across from mannequins in the window of Bergdorf Goodman.
Shopper looking at selection of chocolates in elegant Fifth Avenue candy store.
Pedestrians in midtown seen through window of Fifth Avenue department store.
Two elegantly dressed women standing on sidewalk of Fifth Avenue across from mannequin in the window of Saks department store.
Two elegantly dressed women window shopping outside of Bergdorf Goodman.

Oh, it makes me want to cry to think how much more beautifully the average person dressed back then! Our fast living and lack of time have ruined the street fashion parades. But I suppose we have much more room to dress in whatever way we want now, and we have the choice to dress well or to dress down!

I highly doubt these ladies were “the average person” though :) They’re probably very well to do, shopping on Fifth Avenue.
I think there are still tons of people who dress beautifully, and in a much wider array of styles, on the street!
