I love big hair, and some of the best big hair came out of the 40s. Here are photos of some wonderful and more or less spectacular 40s hairstyles.

Starting with the always beautiful Linda Darnell and her always beautiful hair.

Janet Blair with a huge “bumper bang”.

A gorgeous unknown pinup with beautiful hair.

Ann Savage. This softer version of the bumper bang is probably my favourite 40s hairstyle, and I was going for something similar for this photo shoot.

Marjorie Woodworth looking incredibly beautiful. I first saw this picture at the Hollywood Museum last year. I loved it but didn’t recognise the actress, but eventually I stumbled across the picture and name somewhere online.

Dona Drake. I love this picture and her hair looks amazing.

Margaret Lockwood.

Ginger Rogers with lovely hair. I wish my hair was that thick.

Ginger Rogers again.

Maureen O’Hara.

Marie McDonald with great hair and dress.

Louise Allbritton. I love the colours in this picture. The matching red details and the blue dress look great with the colour of her hair.

Ramsay Ames looking very luxurious.

Peggy Corday, looking pretty amazing.

Ann Sothern with beautiful flowers in her hair.

I love this photo of Marguerite Chapman. Her outfit is perfect.

Lucille Ball with her signature fluff.

Constance Bennett checking herself in her compact (or is it a cigarette case?).
