Halloween!

I was too tired to post these photos yesterday, but here’s my Halloween costume! This year I was Rachael from Blade Runner. I think it looked better in real life than in the photos, but it was hard to take good photos in the dark.

The wig is actually the same one I used for my Lota costume, and I had to make loose “sideburns” that I attached with fashion tape and tons of sticky hairspray, to fake a more convincing hairline. I wore the jacket from my grandmother’s suit, with a black pencil skirt and black heels, and made a fake cigarette.

Horror movies

I love horror movies but I’m very particular about which ones I like. They need to be entertainingly scary. I don’t want to watch too much gross out gore, humiliation or generally emotionally scarring things. I also prefer some kind of supernatural element, I tend to find straightforward slasher movies a bit boring.

These are some of my favourite horror movies. It’s not a definitive list, just the ones on the top of my mind at the moment.

This year I was Debbie Jellinsky from Addams Family Values, one of my favourite characters ever from one of my favourite movies ever. She’s a long time “style icon” of mine if I have those, she’s super beautiful.

I made the dress and managed to find a belt with exactly the same buckle as hers on Etsy, but it had a thin band so I changed it for a broad strip of white fabric. The photos are bad since it was so dark, but here they are!

Happy Halloween!

I was Lota from Island of Lost Souls, which is a really great movie that I discovered by chance because of Lota’s beautiful face.

I was probably about 17 and I was browsing a VHS sale where I could just afford three tapes. I found one with the old Addams Family TV series, Metropolis, Nosferatu and this other movie, Island of Lost Souls, that I’d never heard of but the girl on the cover was so extremely gorgeous. I was trying to choose between Nosferatu and Island of Lost Souls for a long time and finally figured I’d get the unknown movie since I’d already seen Nosferatu and it’s a well known movie that probably wasn’t going to be hard to find some other time.

When I got home and watched it I realised it was a version of The Island of Dr. Moreau. I was already a fan of the one with Val Kilmer and Marlon Brando and I liked this version even better. I have yet to read the book but I’m sure I’ll love it. I remember doing my makeup like Lota and being disappointed that it didn’t make me look like her since my face has a completely different shape than hers, which was still the case when I dressed up like her today, but anyway, here are some photos!

There are a couple of “outtakes” in colour over at my boyfriend’s Flickr.

I cut and styled the wig, dyed and printed the fabric to look like the one Lota wears, made the necklace beads with clay and made the claws from a set of regular fake nails.
